The purpose of the diary is threefold:

  1. Organisation - to help students become well organised and record homework, reminders, results and messages.

  2. Communication - to support home/school communications. Parents / caregivers and teachers are encouraged to write notes in the diary, to share relevant information about the student and school events.

  3. Information - to provide the student and their parent / caregiver with some general information about school procedures.

Home group teachers are the key to ensuring students develop quality diary organisational skills. Students need to be taught these skills. Home group teachers take extra time early in the year to teach your students how to use their diary effectively for:
a) communication;

b) planning and recording homework and important notes; and

c) finding out information in the front section.

Subject teachers need to make time for students to enter homework in their diaries. Use diaries to inform parent/caregivers of significant things students do, such as learning problems, failure to complete set work and outstanding work. Positive comments are always welcome.

Diary checks will be conducted by Year Level Co-ordinators and Senior Management. Home group teachers are encouraged to request diary checks to support students diary skills.
  • Each year - all home group teachers need to familiarise themselves and students with the format of the diary.
  • Students have homework every night - it must be recorded, start day 1.
  • Home group teachers are to countersign parent/caregiver signatures each week.
  • Newsletters received need to be acknowledged by parents.
  • Absentee notes need to be acknowledged.

Students are to keep their diary neat and presentable, to be checked weekly by home group teacher.
Graffiti, inappropriate material is not acceptable.
